Our ten day visit to the Netherlands was all too short but it was time to hit the beaches along Germany’s northern coast. Our first stop was near the harbor city of Cuxhaven. Miles of white sandy beach are found here.

As soon as we crossed the border we were in fields of yellow flowering rapeseed, from which comes canola oil, as we call it in the US. No more tulips, not that we had seen many, so late in the season it was.

We found ourselves in a really nice new apartment, fully equipped and roomy, within a short walk to the beach. All we needed now was some sunshine. No one had told us that winter had not left yet, so the first order of business was to buy some clothes suitable for the weather.

One of the features of this coastal area known as West Friesland are the shallow waters and walkable mudflats. We were eager to get our feet wet and to walk out as far as we dared.

A most popular thing to do here is ride horses in the shallow water at low tide. There were times we saw a dozen or more horses and riders far out on the flats at low tide. It was impressive to watch them gallop by.

Even in high summer, days are often cool and windy. Instead of spending much time in the water, many folks rent korbs and spend the day reading and snoozing, turning to face the sun or away from the wind.

Because of the overcast and chilly days we were having here, it seemed that most visitors were out on their bikes instead of in the water.

Because we had an apartment with a good kitchen, we had all our meals at home. That didn’t preclude our walking to the local bakery each morning for fresh rolls and goodies. Just look at the variety!

I think we better rush on now to Lübeck to meet up with our daughter, Christina, and family for a few days together.
